Memorial Day Weekend!

Memorial Day Weekend is always a fun time in the McGraw household.  We have a family tradition:  my dad takes my brothers to Indianapolis (where his relatives live) to go to the Indianapolis 500.  My mom and I (along with my aunt and occasionally one of my friends) head to Atlantic City, NJ for some quality beach time!  This year was particularly fun because I am finally 21 so I can participate in all the activities that Atlantic City has to offer. 😉

This year, it was just my mom and I.  We had such a fun girls weekend!

Ventnor Pier, NJ!

We left on Friday morning with cold and rainy weather.  I wore yoga pants and long sleeves!  We hoped to drive into warmer temperatures, but that was not the case.

Long pants & long sleeves on the way to the beach. What the heck?!

Philadelphia is always thick with traffic, especially on a holiday weekend!

Gray, rainy day!

We arrived in Atlantic City around 4:30 p.m. and checked into our hotel, Bally’s Casino.  We quickly unpacked our things and headed to dinner at Cafe Roma, an Italian restaurant in Caesar’s Hotel & Casino.  It is one of our favorite places to eat when we’re there!  I was excited to sign up for my player’s card and legally gamble with my mom for the first time in New Jersey. 🙂  My aunt had high hopes for me…

Lucky winner...?

Lucky winner?!

…but I managed to lose all weekend.  My mom was very lucky, though!  It was still fun to play a bit even though I wasn’t so lucky.  Our first night at the hotel was very loud.  There were a few rooms near us that were playing music and slamming doors late into the evening so the next day, after we complained to the front desk, we got our revenge!

Tiptoe-ing across the hall…

I present to you my mother, the klepto.  You know those little “Do Not Disturb” signs that hotels give you to place on the door in the morning so housekeeping does not bother you?  We weren’t so sure the room across the hall deserved that privilege. 😉  Luckily, we were able to be moved into a much nicer and quieter room a few floors above our party friends so we were well-rested the rest of the weekend!

Another exciting thing that happened this weekend was that my mom’s aunt and her son were visiting Atlantic City as well.  They live in North Carolina so we don’t see them very often.  In fact, I haven’t seen my second cousin since I was very young!  My mom talks to her aunt on the phone several times a week so it was nice to get together.  They were staying across town at Harrah’s Resort & Casino and we met them for dinner on Saturday night.

My great aunt Gerri, my mom, and me!

Yes, my mom and I wore matching shirts.  We are just that cool.  My cousin’s wife took us to a delicious gelato shop after dinner and they had the most amazing flavors!  I sampled strawberry mango, caramel, and birthday cake, but I settled for a tried and true combination. 🙂

Dark chocolate gelato & peanut butter gelato!

My favorite part of vacation is always running on the beach.  On Saturday morning, it was still a bit chilly so I worked out in our hotel’s fitness center.  It felt good to hit the beach on Sunday, though!

Running on the beach = happiness.

Yesterday, we stayed at the beach for as long as possible even though we had to come back to Pittsburgh…at some point!  We woke up, rode bikes for 8 miles on the boardwalk, ate lunch, went to the beach, and then split up so my mom could try her luck once more while I went shopping.  We didn’t end up leaving the city until 3 p.m. which made for a late arrival home, but it was definitely worth it.  It was a weekend to remember!
